04-20-2010 -- CCAC students help children in war zones
PITTSBURGH-Students at the Community College of Allegheny County
(CCAC) Boyce campus in Monroeville are collecting school supplies
and donations for children in the midst of the conflicts in
Afghanistan and Iraq.
The project is led by Educational Psychology students in a class
taught by Angela M. Fiore, associate professor of psychology. They
collect school-related supplies and some food items for young
students in war zones. The donations are boxed and shipped to
points of contact in Afghanistan and Iraq through the Operation
Crayon campaign of the organization AdoptAPlatoon.
This year the initiative has grown. Students have coordinated a
bake sale and contacted local businesses for donations in addition
to collecting items on campus. Donations will be accepted through
the May 3 ship date for the care packages.
"This activity is not about the wars, but about sending school
supplies to needy children caught innocently in the middle," said
Fiore. "CCAC is about education. For us to extend this mission to
other places altruistically is a valuable lesson."
