PITTSBURGH-The Community College of Allegheny County and the African American Chamber of Commerce of Western Pennsylvania will present a Junior Chamber of Commerce Workshop on marketing and communications at CCAC's Homewood-Brushton Center on Wednesday, September 26. The workshop, "Marketing Savvy for Your Business," will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The workshop will feature panelists from The Savvy Group marketing agency, who will share advice and insight on what it takes to successfully promote a business and/or brand. The event is the first in a series of four workshops presented by CCAC and the African American Chamber of Commerce to be held at the center this school year. The next workshop will focus on information technology and will take place on Wednesday, October 24, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The workshops are part of the Junior Chamber of Commerce Intern Collaborative, a program of the African American Chamber of Commerce of Western Pennsylvania and CCAC. Initiated in 2017, the program targets students, particularly African Americans, who have an interest in becoming entrepreneurs. It is designed to enhance students' understanding of what it means to be a member of an established professional organization such as the African American Chamber of Commerce.

CCAC students who attend all four workshops as well as a breakfast meeting during the spring 2019 semester will receive a free one-year membership to the African American Junior Chamber of Commerce. Last year, a total of 17 students participated in the program. The students gained out-of-classroom experience and had access to resources and networking, which enabled some of the students to successfully launch a business.

Dr. Vladimir St. Surin, assistant dean of the Homewood-Brushton Center, said, "Having this program at HBC brought like-minded students together. They were already coming to the center for their classes, but the chamber provided a vehicle for collaboration. Students were able to network with each other and also externally through the chamber membership."
