• 1098-T Tuition Tax Statement

    Important Tax Information

    The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 (TRA-97) introduced several educational tax incentives in an effort to make college more affordable. The American Opportunity Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit provide a potential opportunity to take a tax credit for qualifying educational expenses. TRA-97 also provides a deduction for the interest paid on qualifying student loans. As part of TRA-97 and in accordance with Internal Revenue Code, the college is required to furnish you with IRS Form 1098-T (tuition statement) reporting qualified tuition and certain financial aid information. Regulations require that 1098T forms are issued to students by January 31 of each calendar year.

    Educational institutions may choose to report payments received, or amounts billed, for qualified tuition and related expenses. The Community College of Allegheny County has chosen to use amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses. However, payment information is available by accessing your statement of account activity online through CCAC Central e-Services at any time. This represents the best information we can provide for the purpose of determining any tax credit eligibility.

    1098-T FAQ’s

    What is Form 1098-T?
    A 1098-T is a Federal IRS form that is furnished for tax purposes. An eligible educational institution, such as CCAC, must furnish this statement to you based on your enrollment during the prior calendar year. 1098-T forms are provided to students by January 31st each year. You, or the person who can claim you as a dependent, may be able to claim an education credit on Form 1040 or 1040A, only for the qualified tuition and related expenses that were actually paid in 2014. To see if you qualify for the credit, see Pub. 970, Tax Benefits for Education; Form 8863, Education Credits; and the Form 1040 or 1040A instructions.     Why did I receive Form 1098-T?
    CCAC is required to provide this form so that you can use it to determine if you are eligible and what dollar amount you can claim for the American Opportunity Credit or Lifetime Learning tax Credit.

    In the future, can I receive Form 1098-T electronically?
    1098-T forms are made available online to all students through CCAC Central e-Services. You can print additional copies of your 1098-T at any time. If you prefer to no longer receive a paper 1098-T form, you must provide CCAC with consent to receive your form electronically. Once you provide consent to receive your 1098-T electronically, you will no longer receive a paper form.

    What is Form 1098-T used for?
    The information on the 1098-T form is provided to assist each Student/Taxpayer in preparing the IRS Form 8863, which is used when claiming the American Opportunity Credit or Lifetime Learning Credit.

    Do I have to use Form 1098-T?
    If you are not paying taxes, or your income is too high to qualify for a tax incentive, you may not need to do anything with your tax form. You should consult with a qualified tax professional or contact the IRS for assistance with determining eligibility for educational tax incentives.    

    What if the SSN on my tax form is incorrect?      
    To correct your Social Security Number (SSN) on your tax form, you must fill out IRS Form W-9S and submit it to the CCAC Student Accounts office. 

    Can I obtain another copy of Form 1098-T?    
    Yes, you may access and print a copy of your 1098-T online at any time from CCAC Central e-Services. 

    I did not receive a statement of account with my 1098-T form.  Do I need a statement of my student account?     
    No, a statement of account is not required in order to determine your eligibility for a tax incentive.  The only information you need is the information reported on your 1098-T form.  If you would like a statement of account, this is available online through CCAC Central e-Services.
